Welcome!

Becoming a Substitute Teacher

All substitute teachers in Illinois are required to have a Substitute Teaching Certificate or an Initial/Standard/Master Teaching Certificate.

Getting Started:

In order to obtain a Substitute Teaching Certificate, you must possess a valid Illinois teaching certificate.

If you do not possess a valid Illinois teaching certificate, you must have earned a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university, evidenced by a valid Official Transcript.

Substitute Teaching Certificates are only valid for four (4) years.  At the end of the four year period, the application and registration process must be completed again, with the exception of presenting the Official Transcript.

You must apply to be a substitute in person at any of the ROE-3 offices in Bond, Fayette, and Effingham Counties.
